The Remnant is a traditionalist Catholic newspaper based in Forest Lake, Minnesota, published in print and online, with a video operation called Remnant TV (Wikipedia). According to the paper's own history, Walter Matt founded it in 1967 after editing the family paper The Wanderer for more than thirty years, following a split with his brother Alphonse over the changes that followed the Second Vatican Council, which Walter opposed (The Remnant). Walter's youngest son, Michael J. Matt, has edited it since 1994. Wikipedia describes the paper as sympathetic to Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre and the Society of Saint Pius X, while noting that its editors are not affiliated with any traditionalist institute. The lawyer Christopher Ferrara is a regular columnist.
Remnant TV began in 2013, after the paper produced daily video reports from Rome around Benedict XVI's resignation and the conclave that elected Francis (The Remnant). Its YouTube channel had about 281,000 subscribers in July 2026, according to the third-party tracker Socialcounts (Socialcounts). The paper has reported receiving YouTube strikes against the channel (The Remnant) and also hosts its videos on its own platform.
Under Pope Francis the paper was a persistent critic of the pontificate. OnePeterFive reported on a public accusation of Francis issued by the editors of The Remnant and Catholic Family News (OnePeterFive), and the paper published texts by Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, including his 2020 letter on the "Great Reset" (The Remnant). According to Wikipedia, the Southern Poverty Law Center has listed Remnant Press among groups it calls radical traditionalist Catholic hate groups; Matt has publicly disputed the listing, telling The Daily Signal that the list was false and outdated (The Daily Signal).
After Leo XIV's election in May 2025, Matt published an open letter asking the new pope to lead the Church back to tradition (The Remnant). Its coverage grew sharper in 2026. After the SSPX's consecrations of 1 July, the paper ran headlines such as "SSPX Excommunication: When Fidelity Becomes the Crime" (The Remnant), a framing examined in a TradWatch™ analysis. In August, Matt called a papal warning against retreating into religious certainties Leo's "biggest blunder" (The Remnant). See papal-critique and resistance media.
