About Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX)
The Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX), styled the "Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X" in Holy See documents, is a traditionalist society of priests led by a superior general, currently Fr. Davide Pagliarani, and a General Council. It was erected on 1 November 1970 as a pious union by Bishop François Charrière of Lausanne, Geneva and Fribourg, and its headquarters are in Menzingen, Switzerland (SSPX; Wikipedia). Its seminaries include Écône in Switzerland and Flavigny-sur-Ozerain in France. Its history is bound up with Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, whose 1988 consecrations at Écône led to the excommunication of Bernard Fellay and Alfonso de Galarreta, lifted in 2009 under Benedict XVI (EWTN News; Wikipedia).
As a publisher, the society speaks through several official websites: the international fsspx.org, the English-language sspx.org, national sites such as fsspx.uk, and the news site FSSPX.News. In 2026 these carried the announcement of episcopal consecrations, the superior general's correspondence with Rome, a live stream of the 1 July ceremony at Écône and a timeline of events. After the Holy See's 2 July decree, sspx.org published a piece headed "Hundreds of Thousands of Catholics Purportedly Excommunicated: How Should We See This?".
Canonical status. The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith declared on 2 July 2026 that the six bishops involved in the consecrations had incurred excommunication and, in an explanatory note, that the society's clergy are to be considered schismatic (Vatican News; Crux). The society calls the penalties "objectively unjust and invalid" and has filed a canonical recourse (Catholic World Report; America). See The SSPX episcopal consecrations of 2026.
Coverage. In July 2026 the Chicago Sun-Times published an investigation headlined "Secrecy over sex abuse permeates traditionalist Catholic group whose leaders were excommunicated by Pope Leo" (Chicago Sun-Times). The paper reported that, unlike many religious orders, the society does not publish a list of U.S. members deemed credibly accused of sexual abuse, and that its leaders declined to provide names or a tally when asked.
