  1. Una Voce and Latin Mass Society voice unease at planned SSPX consecrations

    Una Voce International and the Latin Mass Society said the SSPX plan made its regularisation more remote and appealed to Leo XIV on behalf of Latin Mass Catholics. Their leader Joseph Shaw later said the SSPX had "thrown a hand grenade" into the debate.

  2. Leo XIV receives FSSP superior general Fr. John Berg

    Pope Leo XIV received the superior general of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter in a private audience at the Fraternity's request, during the apostolic visitation begun in 2024; the Fraternity called the meeting cordial.

  1. Vatican announces apostolic visitation of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter

    The Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life announced a visitation of the FSSP, describing it as a way to know the society better and support it; the Fraternity said it did not stem from any problems. The previous ordinary visitation was in 2014.

  1. Francis decree confirms the FSSP's use of the 1962 liturgical books

    Seven months after Traditionis custodes, Pope Francis signed a decree, made public by the FSSP on 21 February, confirming its members' faculty to use the 1962 Missal, Ritual, Pontifical and Breviary, with the local ordinary's consent required outside its own churches except for private Masses.

    Francis issues Traditionis custodes, restricting the pre-1970 Mass

    The motu proprio declared the reformed liturgical books "the unique expression of the lex orandi of the Roman Rite", made the 1962 Missal subject to the diocesan bishop's authorisation, barred new groups, and abrogated earlier norms not in conformity. Francis's accompanying letter cited a 2020 consultation of bishops.

  1. Francis suppresses the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei

    A motu proprio suppressed the Commission created in 1988 and assigned its tasks to a section of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

  1. Former SSPX priests found the Institute of the Good Shepherd

    A group of priests formerly of the Society of St. Pius X, led by Fr. Philippe Laguérie, founded the Institute of the Good Shepherd in full communion with Rome, based at Saint-Éloi in Bordeaux. Sources differ on the exact date in autumn 2006.

  1. John Paul II erects the Personal Apostolic Administration of Campos for traditionalists

    After the priests of the Priestly Union of Saint John Mary Vianney in Campos, Brazil — formed by followers of Bishop Antônio de Castro Mayer — were reconciled with the Holy See, John Paul II erected the Personal Apostolic Administration of Saint John Mary Vianney on 18 January 2002, with Bishop Licínio Rangel as administrator. It remains the only personal apostolic administration and is dedicated to the traditional Mass; Bishop Fernando Arêas Rifan has led it since Rangel's death in December 2002.

  1. Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest erected in Gabon

    Msgr. Gilles Wach and Fr. Philippe Mora founded the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest, a community of priests using the pre-1970 liturgy, which later established its motherhouse and seminary at Gricigliano, Italy.

  1. Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter founded after the Écône consecrations

    By its own account, the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter was founded at the Abbey of Hauterive in Switzerland by about a dozen priests and some twenty seminarians who did not follow Archbishop Lefebvre after the 30 June consecrations; John Paul II erected it canonically the same year.

    John Paul II issues Ecclesia Dei after Lefebvre's episcopal ordinations

    Two days after Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre's unlawful episcopal ordinations of 30 June, John Paul II's motu proprio stated that excommunication had been incurred, created the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei, and asked for a "wide and generous application" of the permissions for the 1962 Missal.
