About Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter (FSSP)
The Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter (FSSP, from its Latin name) is a society of apostolic life of pontifical right whose priests celebrate Mass and the sacraments with the liturgical books in force in 1962 (Vatican News). It is the largest of the communities that emerged from the 1988 rupture between Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre's Society of St. Pius X and the Holy See (see Ecclesia Dei communities).
Origins and size. The Fraternity says it was founded on 18 July 1988 at the Abbey of Hauterive in Switzerland by about a dozen priests and some twenty seminarians, and that Pope John Paul II erected it canonically the same year (FSSP; FSSP North America). Its statistics dated 1 November 2025 list 579 members: 387 priests, 30 deacons and 162 other seminarians and postulants, with an average age of 39 (FSSP). It runs two international seminaries, at Wigratzbad in Germany and in Denton, Nebraska (FSSP). Fr. John Berg, superior general from 2006 to 2018, was elected again in July 2024 for a six-year term (FSSP; Wikipedia).
Relations with Rome since 2021. After Traditionis custodes, Pope Francis signed a decree on 11 February 2022, published by the Fraternity on 21 February, confirming its members' faculty to use the 1962 Missal, Ritual, Pontifical and Breviary; outside the Fraternity's own churches and oratories this requires the local ordinary's consent, except for private Masses (CNA via EWTN News; Adoremus). In September 2024 the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life ordered an apostolic visitation; the Fraternity said it did not stem from any problems (Catholic World Report; FSSP). On 19 January 2026 Pope Leo XIV received Fr. Berg in a private audience, which the Fraternity described as cordial and as touching on misunderstandings and obstacles it meets in some places (FSSP; National Catholic Register).
Public positions. In April 2026 a study signed "Theologus" and attributed to priests of the Fraternity challenged the SSPX's justification for its planned consecrations; the SSPX replied by accusing the Fraternity of legalism (Catholic Herald). The general chaplain of the Paris–Chartres pilgrimage, Abbé Jean de Massia, is an FSSP priest (America/OSV News).
