About Joseph Shaw
Joseph Shaw is a British Catholic writer and philosopher who chairs the Latin Mass Society of England and Wales and is president of the International Federation Una Voce (FIUV). He holds a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Oxford and spent eighteen years on its philosophy faculty, including as a tutorial fellow of St Benet's Hall, which closed in 2022; he now works as an independent scholar and writer (Catholic Answers; Angelico Press). He served as FIUV's secretary before becoming its president in 2021, and is listed as president for the 2025–2027 term (FIUV; FIUV). His books include The Latin Mass and the Intellectuals and Sacred and Great: A Brief Introduction to the Traditional Latin Mass, reviewed by New Liturgical Movement in 2024 (NLM). He writes for outlets including Catholic World Report (CWR) and posts on X as @LMSChairman.
On the SSPX consecrations. In February 2026 Shaw signed, as FIUV president, a joint FIUV–LMS statement expressing unease at the Society of St. Pius X's plan to consecrate bishops without a papal mandate and appealing to the bishops and Pope Leo XIV regarding Catholics attached to the older rite (Una Voce Canada). At a London Oratory symposium on 12 February he said the SSPX had "thrown a hand grenade" into hopes that Leo would relax restrictions, and that groups like his risked "being lumped together" with the Society by people indifferent to the distinction (OSV News). After the July excommunications he said he did not agree with the Society's decision or consider it justified, while adding that its members had acted according to conscience (Detroit Catholic/OSV News). The Remnant published a rejoinder arguing that such public distancing signals division among traditional Catholics (The Remnant).
