SSPX pilgrims barred from Martyrs' Shrine church in Midland under Toronto ban
On the feast of the Canadian Martyrs, the SSPX's national pilgrimage to the Martyrs' Shrine in Midland, Ontario, could not enter the shrine church or venerate the relics there, after the Archdiocese of Toronto under Cardinal Frank Leo barred SSPX groups from diocesan sites following the 1 July consecrations; Mass was celebrated in a nearby park. In an update dated 6 October, the society's Canadian district superior, Fr. Yves Le Roux, asked the faithful to accept the decision without bitterness, writing "we fully submit to this decision of the Cardinal." The society put attendance at about 300.

Lourdes ban on SSPX celebrations reported on eve of Leo XIV's France visit
On the eve of Pope Leo XIV's visit to France, France 24 reported that SSPX gatherings at the Lourdes shrine had been ruled out for October 2026, including the society's annual Christ the King pilgrimage. In a note dated 13 August, Bishop Jean-Marc Micas of Tarbes and Lourdes had withdrawn the SSPX's authorisation to celebrate Mass, administer sacraments or hold public prayers within the sanctuary, citing the 1 July consecrations. The SSPX's French district said it would maintain its 24–26 October pilgrimage to Lourdes.

SSPX files canonical recourse against the schism decree
The Society lodged a preliminary recourse with the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith under canons 1734 and following, asking for the 2 July decree to be revoked and corrected for alleged errors in procedure and law, and argued that the filing suspends the decree. Canonists disputed that a recourse can suspend penalties incurred automatically, and The Pillar judged the Society's canonical prospects poor.

Vatican decree declares the SSPX in schism and confirms excommunications
A decree of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, signed by Cardinal Fernández, declared that the consecrating bishop, Alfonso de Galarreta, the co-consecrator, Bernard Fellay, and the four new bishops had incurred latae sententiae excommunication reserved to the Apostolic See, and warned clerics and lay faithful not to adhere to the schism. An accompanying explanatory note said the Society's clergy are to be considered schismatic and treated confessions heard and marriages witnessed by SSPX priests as invalid, a point disputed by some canonists and by Cardinal Gerhard Müller. The dicastery also issued a procedure for priests and faithful wishing to return to full communion.

Leo XIV makes a final appeal to the SSPX to call off the consecrations
On the eve of the ceremony, Leo XIV appealed to the Society to turn back, warning that the consecrations would deprive its faithful of the licit, and in some cases even valid, reception of the sacraments. In the letter, dated 29 June and addressed to superior general Davide Pagliarani, he wrote that "to tear the seamless garment of Christ is a sin of extreme gravity"; Pagliarani replied within hours asking for time for discernment.

Former SSPX bishop Richard Williamson dies at 84
Richard Williamson, one of the four bishops consecrated by Archbishop Lefebvre in 1988, died on 29 January 2025 aged 84. Expelled from the SSPX in 2012, he had incurred excommunication again in 2015 by consecrating a bishop in Brazil without papal mandate; his televised Holocaust denial in 2009 had led to a conviction for incitement in Germany.

Holy See allows bishops to grant faculties for marriages of SSPX faithful
A letter of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei signed by Cardinal Gerhard Müller, dated 27 March and published 4 April 2017, said Pope Francis had authorised local ordinaries to grant faculties for marriages of faithful who follow the SSPX — where possible with a diocesan priest receiving the consent, otherwise by delegating an SSPX priest. The letter acknowledged the Society's 'illegitimate canonical situation'; the SSPX General House thanked the pope.

On 13 June 2012 Cardinal William Levada gave Bishop Bernard Fellay the Holy See's evaluation of the SSPX's response to the Doctrinal Preamble first presented to him on 14 September 2011; a leaked internal SSPX letter later said Fellay found the text unacceptable and could not sign it. The Holy See treated the SSPX General Chapter's July declaration as primarily an internal document, and in late 2012 the Ecclesia Dei commission said dialogue would continue while it awaited the Society's official reply.

Bishop Mamie withdraws canonical approval of the Society of Saint Pius X
With the agreement of Cardinal Arturo Tabera, prefect of the Congregation for Religious, Bishop Pierre Mamie of Lausanne, Geneva and Fribourg suppressed the Society of Saint Pius X with immediate effect on 6 May 1975, after Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre's declaration of 21 November 1974 rejecting the conciliar reform. Lefebvre appealed; according to the Society, Cardinal Staffa rejected the appeal on 10 June 1975. The SSPX maintains that a local bishop could not lawfully suppress the Society once approved.
