About Bernard Fellay
Bernard Fellay is a bishop of the Society of Saint Pius X. He was one of the four priests whom Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre consecrated bishops at Écône on 30 June 1988 without papal mandate; a Congregation for Bishops decree of 1 July 1988 declared them excommunicated (EWTN Library). A decree of 21 January 2009, issued in response to a request Fellay made on behalf of the four, remitted the penalty (vatican.va; EWTN News). He was the society's superior general from 1994 until 2018, when Davide Pagliarani succeeded him (Wikipedia). Before July 2026 he and Alfonso de Galarreta were the society's two active bishops (Wikipedia).
On 1 July 2026 he served as co-consecrator when de Galarreta consecrated four bishops at Écône without a pontifical mandate (FSSPX.News; OSV News). The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith's decree of 2 July declared that, having participated directly as co-consecrator and so publicly adhered to the schismatic act, he incurred latae sententiae excommunication under canon 1364 §1, reserved to the Apostolic See (Vatican News; Catholic World Report). EWTN News noted that he and de Galarreta have now been declared excommunicated twice. The society rejects the 2026 penalties as "objectively unjust and invalid" and has filed a canonical recourse (Catholic World Report). See The SSPX episcopal consecrations of 2026.
In a talk in Ontario on 28 December 2012, Fellay named "the Jews, the Masons" among "the enemies of the Church" opposed to the society's recognition by Rome. Vatican spokesman Fr. Federico Lombardi said it was impossible to speak of Jews as enemies of the Church (JTA via St. Louis Jewish Light), and the Canadian bishops' conference said such remarks were not in accordance with Catholic teaching (The Catholic Register). The SSPX's U.S. District said the word was used in a religious sense and referred to the leaders of Jewish organisations rather than the Jewish people, and rejected accusations of antisemitism (SSPX U.S. District statement via Dialogika). The Anti-Defamation League called Fellay an "unrepentant anti-Semite" (ADL statement via Dialogika). See Judaism and antisemitism.
