About Eric Sammons

Eric Sammons is an American Catholic writer and editor. He was named editor-in-chief of Crisis Magazine in January 2021 and is executive director of its parent company, Crisis Publications (Wikipedia; Crisis Magazine). In July 2021 Crisis Publications acquired OnePeterFive from its founder Steve Skojec; Sammons later wrote that he had first raised the idea with Skojec two years earlier and that the site's readership had been dropping (OnePeterFive). He hosts the Crisis Point podcast (Apple Podcasts).

He has written about how Catholics should respond to failings in Church leadership. In a 2016 OnePeterFive essay, "Normalcy Bias and Papal Positivism", he argued that many Catholics defend the pope by default and that it is not safe to assume prelates at any level are holy and orthodox (OnePeterFive). On Crisis Point he has discussed with Timothy Flanders what it means to resist the pope (Crisis Magazine). Defenders of Pope Francis counted Crisis among outlets they regarded as hostile to him (Millennial Journal).

After Leo XIV's election, a May 2025 Crisis Point episode asked how traditional Catholics should respond to the new pope (Crisis Point). In a later column, "Slow to Anger", he asked whether anger at Leo was justified, acknowledging a difficult stretch that included the pope's remarks on the death penalty and a perceived endorsement of an award by Cardinal Blase Cupich to a politician who supports legal abortion (Crisis Magazine).

He was among the traditionalist-leaning commentators who opposed the SSPX's consecrations of 1 July 2026. In Crisis editorials he argued that much of the confusion about "automatic" excommunication came from misunderstanding it, and set out what he called the legitimate options for Catholics attached to the Society, the first being to obey the pope and refrain from association with it (Crisis Magazine; Crisis Magazine). Integrity Magazine, which is critical of what it calls "Trad Inc.", described the split as turning former friends of the Society into foes (Integrity Magazine).
