About Steve Skojec

Steve Skojec is an American writer best known as the founder of OnePeterFive, the traditionalist Catholic web magazine he launched on 1 August 2014 (OnePeterFive). He describes it as an online journal and education-based 501(c)(3) about Catholic culture that he founded and ran as publisher and executive director (steveskojec.com). During those years the site published traditionalist commentary on Pope Francis's pontificate, including coverage of other outlets' public accusations against the pope (OnePeterFive).

In 2021 Skojec wrote publicly about a crisis of faith. A piece in The American Conservative headlined "Steve Skojec Has Had Enough" relayed his account of some seventeen years spent as an apologist for traditionalist Catholicism, the last seven running OnePeterFive, and of his disillusionment with Church leaders (The American Conservative). On OnePeterFive he then said he had not left the Church, but was re-examining his beliefs and stepping back from traditionalism as a culture rather than from the traditional liturgy and sacraments (OnePeterFive). In July 2021 he handed the site to Crisis Publications, led by Eric Sammons, and its new owners announced that he would no longer be involved (OnePeterFive; OnePeterFive).

His departure became a reference point in debates about traditionalist media. In August 2022 a Catholic World Report column cited his case in arguing that fighting the Church can lead people out of it; Skojec replied in the comments that he had been fighting to preserve an illusion (Catholic World Report). From the traditionalist side, the Bellarmine Forum argued that the problem lay in his experience at OnePeterFive rather than in the faith (Bellarmine Forum).

He now writes on his Substack, The Skojec File. After Francis's death in April 2025 he published "Pope Francis is Dead, But the Damage is Done", reflecting on the pontificate and on the years since he left OnePeterFive (The Skojec File). See papal-critique and resistance media.
