  1. Bishop Strickland urges Catholics to reject Vatican note on interreligious dialogue

    On the day the Vatican published A Journey of Hope, its note marking sixty years of Nostra Aetate, Bishop Joseph Strickland wrote on X that the statement "must be rejected and repudiated by all who hold Jesus Christ and His Church as the only way to the Father," objecting to a passage on proselytism. LifeSiteNews reported his view that the note "can give rise to grave confusion"; The Letters from Leo, a newsletter covering the pontificate, pointed out that the note says dialogue must avoid relativism and syncretism.

  2. Vatican publishes 'A Journey of Hope' on sixty years of Nostra Aetate

    Three dicasteries jointly published a note on interreligious dialogue since 1965, approved by Leo XIV on 22 June. It presents Nostra Aetate as the Church's response to the Shoah and includes a section on dialogue with the Jewish people.

  1. Leo XIV: 'the Church does not tolerate antisemitism'

    A day after commemorating Nostra Aetate's 60th anniversary, Leo XIV told his general audience that the Church does not tolerate antisemitism and fights it on the basis of the Gospel. He described the declaration's affirmation of Christianity's Jewish roots as "a point of no return".

  1. Strickland responds to Pope Francis's Singapore remarks on religions

    Strickland posted on X asking for prayer that Pope Francis would clearly state that Jesus Christ is the only way, after the pope likened religions to different languages for approaching God at an interreligious meeting in Singapore.

  1. Amazon synod 'Pachamama' statues taken from a Rome church and thrown into the Tiber

    During the Synod of Bishops for the Amazon, five statues displayed at the Carmelite church of Santa Maria in Traspontina were taken early on 21 October 2019 and thrown into the Tiber; traditionalist and conservative critics had objected to them as idolatrous. On 25 October Pope Francis, speaking as bishop of Rome, asked pardon of those offended by their removal, and in November Austrian activist Alexander Tschugguel said he was one of those responsible.

  1. Vatican commission publishes 'The Gifts and the Calling of God Are Irrevocable'

    Marking the 50th anniversary of Nostra Aetate 4, the Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews published a theological reflection, not a magisterial text. It states that the Church neither conducts nor supports any specific institutional mission work directed towards Jews.

1986

  1. John Paul II hosts the World Day of Prayer for Peace at Assisi

    John Paul II invited representatives of Christian churches and of world religions to Assisi to pray for peace, saying their different professions of faith did not lessen the meaning of the day. Benedict XVI later wrote that care had been taken so the meeting would not lend itself to syncretistic readings based on relativism.

1965

  1. Vatican II promulgates Nostra Aetate on the Church and non-Christian religions

    Paul VI proclaimed the conciliar declaration Nostra Aetate. Its section 4 teaches that Christ's Passion cannot be charged against all Jews then living or against Jews today, and it decries antisemitism. See Judaism and antisemitism.
