About Gladden Pappin

Gladden Pappin is an American political theorist associated with the postliberal movement. Speaker biographies published by the Budapest Balkans Forum and the National Conservatism conference (where he presented at NatCon 4 in 2024) describe him as a former associate professor of politics at the University of Dallas, co-founder and deputy editor of the journal American Affairs, and co-founder of Postliberal Order; they list Harvard degrees in history (AB, 2004) and government (PhD, 2012). The Los Angeles Review of Books names him among Postliberal Order's four founders, with Patrick Deneen, Chad Pecknold and Adrian Vermeule. Texas Monthly published a profile of him under the headline "Gladden Pappin Wants to Make Conservatism Great Again".

Hungary. From 2023 Pappin headed the Hungarian Institute of International Affairs (HIIA), a government foreign-policy institute that then operated under the Prime Minister's Office. The Hungarian Conservative describes him as the American post-liberal political theorist who led the institute from 2023 and as closely connected to circles around U.S. Vice President JD Vance.

Departure (2026). Following the formation of a new government led by the Tisza party, Foreign Minister Anita Orbán accepted Pappin's resignation on 31 July 2026. The Foreign Ministry announced on 3 August that Botond Feledy would become the institute's director general and that the institute would return to the ministry's supervision (Telex, ATV, Hungarian Conservative). In an interview reported by the Hungarian Conservative, Feledy described his course as a complete break with the institute's previous American-led, MAGA-aligned orientation. The coverage reviewed for this profile did not include a public statement from Pappin about his reasons for leaving.
