About Postliberal Order

Postliberal Order is an online newsletter founded by four Catholic academics: Patrick Deneen of the University of Notre Dame, Gladden Pappin, then of the University of Dallas, Chad Pecknold of The Catholic University of America, and Adrian Vermeule of Harvard Law School, according to the Los Angeles Review of Books. A 2024 academic article published by Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw states that the four began publishing together at postliberalorder.com in 2021 under the collective name "The Postliberals", after deciding in November 2021 to start the platform. Speaker biographies of Pappin also list him as a co-founder (Budapest Balkans Forum).

Positions. The newsletter serves as a venue for its founders' critique of liberalism and their case for politics ordered to the common good, positions developed at greater length in Deneen's Regime Change (2023) and Vermeule's Common Good Constitutionalism (2022). Not all of its founders accept the label "integralist": Religion Watch reported that Deneen rejected critics' attempts to link him to integralism, while The Catholic Register described Vermeule as perhaps the most public intellectual associated with it.

Founders' public roles since launch. The founders' careers have drawn the newsletter's circle closer to government. Pappin led the Hungarian Institute of International Affairs from 2023 until his resignation was accepted on 31 July 2026 (Telex, Hungarian Conservative). In 2026 Pecknold took leave from Catholic University for a public-outreach post at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (National Catholic Register). The London Review of Books and Le Grand Continent have reported that Deneen is often described, or cited by JD Vance himself, as an influence on the vice president.
