About Edward Pentin
Edward Pentin is a journalist and author who reports on the Holy See from Rome. His biography says he began his career in Rome as a producer and presenter at Vatican Radio before becoming Rome correspondent of the National Catholic Register (Edward Pentin); the Register's author page lists him as senior contributor and EWTN News Vatican analyst (National Catholic Register). He has also written for Newsweek, Foreign Affairs and Newsmax, was a contributing editor of the Franciscan quarterly The Holy Land Review from 2008 to 2013, and has worked as a research assistant to Lord Alton of Liverpool (Edward Pentin; Sophia Institute Press). His homepage says new articles now appear on his Substack (Edward Pentin).
His books are The Rigging of a Vatican Synod? An Investigation into Alleged Manipulation at the Extraordinary Synod on the Family (Ignatius Press, 2015) and The Next Pope: The Leading Cardinal Candidates (Sophia Institute Press, 2020), which profiles 19 cardinals (Edward Pentin). Traditionalist outlets have engaged with his work: OnePeterFive reviewed The Next Pope (OnePeterFive), and The Remnant has published interviews with him (The Remnant).
With the journalist Diane Montagna he leads the College of Cardinals Report, which presents itself as the work of an international team of journalists and researchers supported by Sophia Institute Press and Cardinalis magazine, offering in-depth profiles of leading cardinals and a table of their positions on contested issues (College of Cardinals Report; Inside the Vatican). Its editors describe their analyses as fact-based and say they strive to be impartial (College of Cardinals Report). Before the May 2025 conclave CNN reported that two church lawyers it consulted judged the report far from impartial, citing, for example, its praise for Cardinal Raymond Burke (CNN), and a National Catholic Reporter opinion column called it "revanchist propaganda" (National Catholic Reporter).
Since Leo XIV's election his Substack has reported on the new pope's governance, including, in November 2025, the plan for an extraordinary consistory of cardinals in January 2026 (Substack) and a further consistory planned for late June (Substack). See papal-critique and resistance media.
