About Diane Montagna

Diane Montagna is an American journalist based in Rome and accredited to the Holy See who writes about Vatican affairs, doctrine and the traditional liturgy, principally through her Substack newsletter, whose profile also describes her as a co-founder of the College of Cardinals Report (Substack). She was previously Rome correspondent for LifeSiteNews and for Aleteia's English edition; Wikipedia describes her as Rome correspondent for the Catholic Herald (Wikipedia). She has written for The Catholic Thing and The Remnant (The Catholic Thing; The Remnant). She co-authored Christus Vincit (Angelico Press, 2019) with Bishop Athanasius Schneider and Calming the Storm (Emmaus Road Publishing, 2022) with Fr. Gerald Murray (The Catholic Thing; Angelico Press).

The 2020 survey report. On 1 July 2025 she published what she described as sections of the final report of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith on its 2020 consultation of bishops about Summorum Pontificum, arguing that it showed most responding bishops opposed changing Benedict XVI's law and so undercut Francis's stated reason for Traditionis custodes (Substack). On 3 July the director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, declined to confirm the documents' authenticity and called the published reports "a very partial and incomplete reconstruction of the decision-making process" (Catholic News Service). Critics, including the blog Sacerdotus, accused her of selective use of the material (Sacerdotus). See the 2025 survey story.

Other reporting. In 2026 she published exclusives on the SSPX crisis, including Schneider's February appeal to Leo XIV to build a bridge to the Society and his first statement after the excommunications (Substack; Substack), as well as the Society's response to its February meeting with the Vatican's doctrine chief (Substack). She responded to Cardinal Arthur Roche's July 2026 Tablet interview in a post titled "More Extraordinary Gaslighting" (Substack). See Leo XIV and the Latin Mass.
