About Tradition in Action
Tradition in Action (TIA) is a traditionalist Catholic organization and website based in Los Angeles. It says it is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) corporation and lists a post office box in Los Angeles as its address (Tradition in Action). Its principal authors are the Brazilian writer Atila Sinke Guimarães and Marian T. Horvat, and it presents its purpose as defending the perennial Magisterium of the Church and working toward a restoration of Christian civilization.
TIA grew out of the Tradition, Family and Property (TFP) movement founded by the Brazilian activist Plinio Corrêa de Oliveira. By its own account, Guimarães was associated with the Brazilian TFP from 1964 until 1998, Horvat collaborated with the American TFP from 1977 until about the same time, and TIA's public life began after Corrêa de Oliveira's death in 1995 (Tradition in Action). The break centred on Guimarães's multi-volume collection on the Second Vatican Council: when the American edition of the first volume appeared under TIA's responsibility in November 1997, the new leadership of the Brazilian TFP demanded that it be withdrawn, and Guimarães answered the ultimatum on 25 March 1998 (Tradition in Action). TIA says it has no official or unofficial relationship with the American TFP.
Its publications include an eleven-volume collection on Vatican II and a four-book series on Our Lady of Good Success. In 2000 Guimarães and Horvat, with John Vennari of Catholic Family News and Michael J. Matt of The Remnant, published We Resist You to the Face, which TIA presents as a respectful but public resistance to teachings of the Council and of John Paul II that the authors judged contrary to the Magisterium (Tradition in Action). Guimarães and Horvat also wrote Previews of the New Papacy (AbeBooks).
Critics have challenged its methods. A critique published by CatholicCulture.org and quoted by the Women of Grace blog said the site paired photographs with commentary in ways that misrepresented facts, and objected to the forms of address it used for recent popes (Women of Grace).
