About American TFP / America Needs Fatima
The American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property (American TFP) describes itself as a civic organization of Catholic inspiration that seeks to defend the basic values of Christian civilization in a legal and peaceful way (The American TFP). It says it was founded in 1973 and draws on the thought of the Brazilian activist Plinio Corrêa de Oliveira, who founded the first TFP in Brazil in 1960, and especially on his book Revolution and Counter-Revolution (The American TFP; The American TFP). It lists a mailing address in Hanover, Pennsylvania (The American TFP), and its activities include lectures, seminars, newspaper advertisement campaigns, publications and coordinated protests. Its vice president, John Horvat II, is the author of Return to Order (Return to Order). See also the international TFP network.
America Needs Fatima (ANF) is its devotional campaign. Since 2007 ANF has asked Catholics to pray the rosary in a public place at noon on the Saturday closest to 13 October, the anniversary of the last Fatima apparition; it reported a record 22,662 rallies across the United States in October 2024 (America Needs Fatima; America Needs Fatima). ANF also distributes rosaries and devotional materials and runs campaigns against what it considers blasphemy (Wikipedia).
The TFP's relationship with Church authorities has been contested. In 1985 Brazil's bishops' conference criticised the Brazilian TFP for a lack of communion with the hierarchy; the American TFP has published that note with a rebuttal (The American TFP). TFP writers criticised Pope Francis, for example in an article on his 2019 remark that it was an honour to be attacked by Americans (The American TFP), and the pro-Francis site Where Peter Is argued that the TFP network was a strategic and intellectual centre of traditionalist opposition to him (Where Peter Is). After Leo XIV's election on 8 May 2025, the TFP and ANF published a message of congratulations expressing the hope that his pontificate would be a point of true unity in Christ (America Needs Fatima).
Tradition in Action, founded by former TFP associates, says it has no relationship with the American TFP. See papal-critique and resistance media.
