Taylor Marshall says Cardinal Roche only called a Quran reading at Mass “misguided”; he also called it a very serious matter

Discussing Cardinal Roche’s interview with Ad Vaticanum, Dr Taylor Marshall says the cardinal used a soft word for Islamic prayers at a Belgian Mass while warning traditionalists of peril to their souls. The interview shows a stronger answer than the episode reports, and the Belgian case was a Quran reading.

On 13 October 2026 Dr Taylor Marshall discussed Cardinal Arthur Roche’s interview with the website Ad Vaticanum in “Cardinal Roche on Latin Mass and Muslim Mass” (podcast). He argues the cardinal judged a Belgian university Mass mildly while speaking severely of traditionalists. Two of his statements can be checked against the interview.

Here, just putting in Islamic prayers is misguided. What? Why can't we say sinful, bad, wrong, violation, abuse of the liturgy?

— Taylor Marshall, Dr. Taylor Marshall Podcast

In brief: Cardinal Roche called the inclusion of Islamic prayers in a Mass merely “misguided”.

Our verdict: MisleadingContains some truth but leaves a false impression.

Context

In the same interview Cardinal Roche said Leo XIV “is not going to change Traditionis Custodes” and that those who resist the Council are “edging yourself away from the centre of Catholicism”. Marshall’s criticism of those passages is opinion and is not rated here.

On statement 1 · Taylor Marshall

Marshall reads the interviewer’s question and the first words of the answer, “completely misguided”, before commenting.

Statement 1 · Taylor Marshall

Cardinal Roche called the inclusion of Islamic prayers in a Mass merely “misguided”.

  1. Verifiable fact

    The rest of the answer

Cardinal Roche answered: “Completely misguided. It is a misunderstanding of what the celebration of the Eucharist is, in the first place. Secondly, to disregard what has been given to us in the reform of the liturgy is a very serious matter”. He added that such “social adaptation is nothing but a trend which has no theological substance to it” (Ad Vaticanum).

  2. TradWatch analysis

    A fair contrast, overstated

Whether the cardinal’s language about traditionalists is harsher than his language about the Belgian Mass is a fair point of comment. But presenting his answer as the single word “misguided” leaves out that he called it a misunderstanding of the Eucharist and “a very serious matter”.

Statement 2 · Taylor Marshall

At the Belgian Mass, Muslim prayers were prayed during the liturgy.

  1. Verifiable fact

    As the interview describes it

The interviewer described the case as “a Catholic university in Belgium allowing a reading from the Quran to be chanted as part of their opening Holy Mass for the university year”, with a layman giving the homily (Ad Vaticanum). A chanted Quran reading is what was put to the cardinal; the interview does not describe Muslim prayers.

Bottom line

Marshall’s contrast rests on a shortened quotation: Cardinal Roche called the Belgian Mass “completely misguided” and “a very serious matter”, a misunderstanding of the Eucharist. And the case put to him was a chanted Quran reading, not Muslim prayers.
