LifeSite says Cardinal Roche “falsely” linked Summorum Pontificum to the SSPX; Benedict XVI’s own letter names reconciliation as a reason
LifeSiteNews calls false Cardinal Roche’s statement that Summorum Pontificum was meant partly to smooth the SSPX’s return. Benedict XVI denied it was mainly a concession to the Society, but his 2007 letter to bishops gives reconciliation within the Church as the “positive reason” for the decree.

Context
Pope Francis’s 2021 motu proprio Traditionis custodes restricted the use of the 1962 Missal; Cardinal Roche has led its implementation. In the same interview he said Leo XIV “is not going to change Traditionis Custodes”.
On statement 1 · LifeSiteNews
LifeSite quotes Benedict’s book-length interview Last Testament, in which he called the idea that the decree was “primarily … a concession” to the Society “absolutely false”, while adding that a pope must try to lead such groups back into unity.

Verifiable fact What Cardinal Roche said
In the interview he said bishops were concerned “partly because Summorum Pontificum was created to accommodate, and also to smooth the way for, the Society of Saint Pius X to return to the Church” (Ad Vaticanum). He described it as one aim, not the only one.

Verifiable fact Benedict XVI’s letter of 2007
In the letter that accompanied the decree, Benedict wrote: “I now come to the positive reason which motivated my decision… It is a matter of coming to an interior reconciliation in the heart of the Church,” recalling divisions that hardened when “not enough was done… to maintain or regain reconciliation and unity”. He also cited young people drawn to the older form and the need for clearer rules (letter to bishops).

TradWatch analysis Both simplify
Benedict rejected the idea that the decree was mainly a concession to the SSPX, so LifeSite has support for saying it was not the goal. But his own letter makes reconciliation with those at risk of division a stated reason, and in the passage LifeSite quotes he said that leading such people back was part of a pope’s duty. Calling Roche’s “partly” claim simply false overstates the record.
Bottom line
Benedict XVI denied that Summorum Pontificum was mainly a concession to the SSPX, but his 2007 letter names reconciliation within the Church as the decree’s “positive reason”. Cardinal Roche said this was “partly” the aim; calling that simply false overstates the record.
