On LifeSite, a guest says Cardinal Siri was elected and accepted in 1958 because of white smoke. The record does not show it

In the John-Henry Westen Show, author Gary Giuffre presents the “Siri thesis”: that Cardinal Giuseppe Siri was elected pope in October 1958 and accepted. The confusing smoke of 26 October is well documented; an accepted election is not. Angelo Roncalli was elected on 28 October and took the name John XXIII.

In an episode of The John-Henry Westen Show published by LifeSiteNews on 16 October 2026, John-Henry Westen interviews author Gary Giuffre, who argues that Cardinal Giuseppe Siri was elected pope in the October 1958 conclave and accepted, before a threat led to a different outcome. Giuffre rests the claim on an account he says he heard in 1993 from a Vatican diplomat, and on the white smoke seen on 26 October 1958.

at 20:59–21:16

Siri was elected on the fourth ballot to 58 conclave. And he accepted office. He had to accept the office. Otherwise, there would have been no white smoke

— Gary Giuffre, LifeSiteNews (The John-Henry Westen Show)

In brief: Cardinal Siri was elected pope in 1958 and accepted; the white smoke proves it.

Our verdict: UnsupportedNo evidence was offered, and we found none to support it.

Context

The episode goes on to allege a threat delivered inside the conclave, State Department involvement and a later succession of “impostor” popes. Those claims rest on the same unverified premise and are not rated separately here. The Siri thesis is one of several theories used to argue that the popes since 1958 were not valid.

Statement 1 · Gary Giuffre

Cardinal Siri was elected pope in 1958 and accepted; the white smoke proves it.

  1. Verifiable fact

The smoke confusion was real, and was explained at the time

Newspaper reports read out in the episode itself describe white-looking smoke on the evening of 26 October 1958 and a Vatican Radio announcement that a pope had been elected; the same Associated Press report adds that the confusion lasted until “assurances finally were received from within the conclave that black smoke was intended”. That the smoke looked white is documented; that a candidate had accepted is not.

  2. Verifiable fact

    Who was elected

Cardinal Angelo Roncalli “was elected Pope on 28 October 1958, taking the name John XXIII” (Holy See biography). Cardinal Siri remained Archbishop of Genoa and a cardinal under John XXIII and his successors.

  3. TradWatch analysis

    The evidence offered is second-hand

Giuffre’s main source is a conversation in 1993 with a diplomat who, Giuffre says, “did not claim to have been inside the conclave”. White smoke shows what those burning the ballots intended or what the crowd saw, not that an election was accepted; ambiguous smoke has confused crowds at several conclaves. No document or participant’s account published to date establishes that Siri was elected and accepted.

Bottom line

The confusing smoke of 26 October 1958 is well documented, but it does not show that Cardinal Siri was elected and accepted. The election on record is Angelo Roncalli’s, on 28 October 1958.
