Bishop Schneider says the Ordinary Magisterium taught the titles “Coredemptrix” and “Mediatrix of All Graces”. Popes used them; the Vatican now calls the first always inappropriate
In a foreword quoted by LifeSiteNews, Bishop Athanasius Schneider argues that the Church’s Ordinary Magisterium taught these Marian titles over centuries. The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith’s 2025 note records that popes used “Co-redemptrix”, John Paul II at least seven times, but says the doctrine was judged “not mature” in 1996 and that the title is “always inappropriate”. LifeSiteNews also softens the note’s wording.

Verifiable fact Popes did use the title
Mater Populi fidelis records that some popes used “Co-redemptrix” and that “Saint John Paul II referred to Mary as ‘Co-redemptrix’ on at least seven occasions”, while “the Second Vatican Council refrained from using the title for dogmatic, pastoral, and ecumenical reasons” (n. 18, text).

Verifiable fact What the doctrinal office has said
The same note quotes Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger’s 1996 answer to a request to define the titles: “Negative. The precise meaning of these titles is not clear, and the doctrine contained in them is not mature” (n. 19). It concludes that “it is always inappropriate to use the title ‘Co-redemptrix’ to define Mary’s cooperation” (n. 22) and that “special prudence is required when applying the term ‘Mediatrix’ to Mary” (n. 24). LifeSiteNews quotes n. 22 as “it would not be appropriate”, which is softer than the published text (Mater Populi fidelis).

TradWatch analysis Use by popes is not the same as teaching the title
Bishop Schneider is right that popes, saints and Doctors have spoken of Mary’s cooperation in redemption and used these titles, and he stresses that the cooperation is “subordinate”. But occasional papal use is not the same as the Ordinary Magisterium teaching the titles themselves, and the Church’s doctrinal office, with the Pope’s approval, has now advised against “Co-redemptrix”. His foreword is a theological argument against that judgement.

Bottom line
Needs context: popes used “Co-redemptrix”, John Paul II at least seven times, but the Church’s doctrinal office called the doctrine “not mature” in 1996 and now judges the title “always inappropriate”.
