LifeSiteNews says Africa now has more Catholics than Europe. The Vatican’s mission agency figures say so, though one gloss in the article is wrong
LifeSiteNews reports the Fides News Agency’s annual Church statistics: 288,312,000 Catholics in Africa against 287,240,000 in Europe, as of 2024. Its figures match Fides. It mislabels one line, calling 48,511 “non-religious” priests “diocesan”; Fides counts 279,238 diocesan priests.

Africa had more Catholics than Europe in 2024: 288,312,000 against 287,240,000.
Verifiable fact The Fides figures
Fides reports that “Africa has 288,312,000 Catholics, surpassing Europe, where the total number is 287,240,000”, with 1,422,144,000 Catholics worldwide as of 30 June 2024 (17.8% of the world’s population) and 407,421 priests, the first rise in five years (Fides, 16 October 2026). Its yearly changes (Africa +7,580,000, Europe +911,000) put Africa below Europe the year before, so the “first time” in the headline is consistent with the data.

Verifiable fact One line mislabelled
LifeSiteNews writes that “the number of non-religious (i.e., diocesan) priests was 48,511”. Fides gives that figure for “non-religious priests” but lists diocesan priests separately: 279,238, with 128,183 religious priests (Fides). The 48,511 cannot be the diocesan priests.

TradWatch analysis Accurate on the headline figure
The article reproduces the Fides dossier closely and its main claim is correct. The mislabelled line is a side detail that does not affect it.

Bottom line
Accurate: Fides counts 288.3 million Catholics in Africa and 287.2 million in Europe. One aside is wrong: diocesan priests number 279,238, not 48,511.

The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith’s 2025 note records that popes used “Co-redemptrix”, John Paul II at least seven times, but says the doctrine was judged “not mature” in 1996 and that the title is “always inappropriate”.
