Verifiable fact The martyrdom decree
On 27 January 2025 the Pope authorised the decree on “the martyrdom of the Servants of God Pietro da Corpa and four companions, of the Order of Friars Minor, killed in odium fidei in September 1597 in Florida, present-day Georgia” (Holy See Press Office). The decree states the friars were killed in hatred of the faith; the account that the conflict began with Fr de Corpa’s rebuke of a baptised man seeking a second wife is the traditional one given for the cause.
