About Aldo Maria Valli

Aldo Maria Valli (born 1958 in Rho) is an Italian journalist and essayist. According to biographies published by booksellers and his publisher, he joined the national newsroom of RAI's Tg3 in Rome in 1995, became its Vatican correspondent in 1996 and moved to Tg1 as Vatican correspondent in 2007 (Il Giardino dei Libri; Liberilibri). In that role he followed Pope John Paul II on about forty international journeys, covered his final illness in April 2005 in extended special broadcasts and reported live on Benedict XVI's announcement of his resignation (Il Giardino dei Libri). He retired from RAI around 2019–2020; one biography gives 2019, while in a 2020 interview he said he had been retired since January 2020 (Il Giardino dei Libri; Briciole di filosofia).

Duc in altum. Valli opened the blog Duc in altum in 2016. Italian Wikipedia notes that from 2016, after reading the apostolic exhortation Amoris laetitia, he began to criticise openly, in his blog and books, what he regarded as ambiguities in Pope Francis's magisterium; that the blog hosts several voices from Catholic traditionalism; and that it continued to publish Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò after Viganò's excommunication (Wikipedia). In the 2020 interview he described 2016 as a turning point in his religious and intellectual life (Briciole di filosofia). A 2023 interview described the blog as one of the most-followed voices in conservative Catholic circles (Cavevisioni).

Books. His publisher lists titles including Come la Chiesa finì (2017), Il caso Viganò (2018) and Virus e Leviatano (2020) (Liberilibri). In late 2025 he released Duc in altum: Dieci anni, a collection marking the blog's tenth year (Amazon.it).

On 21 April 2025 the blog published a post titled 'In morte di Bergoglio' ('On the death of Bergoglio') (Duc in altum).

Valli published a review by the biblical scholar Silvio Barbaglia rejecting Andrea Cionci's "Ratzinger Code" thesis that Benedict XVI never validly resigned, as the benevacantist site FromRome.info reported critically (FromRome.info); see benevacantism.
