About Duc in altum (Aldo Maria Valli)
Duc in altum is the Italian-language blog of journalist Aldo Maria Valli, formerly Vatican correspondent for RAI's Tg3 and Tg1 news programmes (Il Giardino dei Libri). It is published at aldomariavalli.it and takes its name from a Latin phrase that a 2020 interview with Valli headlined with the Italian rendering 'prendi il largo' ('put out into the deep') (Briciole di filosofia).
Origins and line. Valli opened the blog in 2016 (Liberilibri). Italian Wikipedia states that from 2016, after reading Amoris laetitia, he began to criticise openly what he saw as ambiguities in Pope Francis's magisterium; that the blog hosts various voices from Catholic traditionalism; and that it continued to publish Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò after his excommunication (Wikipedia). A 2023 interview with Valli described Duc in altum as one of the most-followed voices in conservative Catholic circles (Cavevisioni).
Recent activity. On 21 April 2025 the blog published a post titled 'In morte di Bergoglio' ('On the death of Bergoglio') (Duc in altum). In late 2025 Valli published Duc in altum: Dieci anni, a collection marking ten years of the blog (Amazon.it). Valli also has a public Telegram channel (Telegram).
Status. Active as of late 2025; audience figures could not be independently verified.
