About Rorate Caeli

Rorate Caeli is an English-language traditionalist Catholic blog hosted on Blogger; its X profile describes it as a traditional Catholic blog (X). By its own account it was founded on Rorate Sunday, the Fourth Sunday of Advent, in 2005 (Rorate Caeli). Its name is taken from the opening words of Isaiah 45:8 in the Vulgate, which are sung in the Advent liturgy (Wikipedia). The blog's editors write anonymously, and it publishes unsigned commentary, including reflections attributed to anonymous priests (Church Controversies).

The blog regularly publishes documents and translations of interest to traditionalists. In 2026 it posted an English translation of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith's 2 July decree on the Society of Saint Pius X (Rorate Caeli), a canonical analysis of the decree (Rorate Caeli), the Society's communiqué on its recourse (Rorate Caeli) and coverage of Cardinal Arthur Roche's July interview (Rorate Caeli). In September 2025 it published remarks by Leo XIV about the traditional Latin Mass (Rorate Caeli), and in January 2026 it argued that many cardinals at a consistory favoured relaxing Francis's rules, a claim TradWatch™ has not seen independently confirmed (Rorate Caeli).

Its commentary was sharply critical of Pope Francis's liturgical policy. One 2021 response to Traditionis custodes criticised the motu proprio as a whole while treating its requirement to accept the validity and legitimacy of the liturgical reform as unproblematic in itself (SSPX Australia repost). It has also criticised figures within traditionalism: in 2022 it alleged that a 2019 episode of Taylor Marshall's show helped prompt Traditionis custodes, as summarised by the Aquila blog (Aquila). In 2018 it welcomed Brian McCall's appointment as head of Catholic Family News (Rorate Caeli). See Leo XIV and the Latin Mass and papal-critique and resistance media.
