Bishop Schneider, read on Return to Tradition: three checkable points, mostly right, one needs its source

Reading Bishop Athanasius Schneider’s Catholic Herald interview, Return to Tradition relays three factual points: what Traditionis custodes says about moving people to the new Mass, what John Paul II said about attachment to the old, and what the Bishop of Antwerp announced. The aim he cites is in Pope Francis’s accompanying letter rather than the motu proprio itself; the other two hold, with a date slip.

Statement 1 · Athanasius Schneider

Traditionis custodes states that those attending the traditional rite must gradually be led to the new Mass.

  1. Verifiable fact

It is in the accompanying letter

The aim appears in Pope Francis’s letter to bishops published with the motu proprio: to provide for the good of those rooted in the previous form who “need to return in due time to the Roman Rite promulgated by Saints Paul VI and John Paul II” (letter). The motu proprio’s own articles regulate permissions rather than state this goal.

  2. TradWatch analysis

    Substance right, source loose

The goal he describes is the Pope’s stated intention, published the same day; calling it “clearly stated in this document” is fair only if the letter is read with the motu proprio, as it was meant to be.

Statement 2 · Athanasius Schneider

John Paul II declared attachment to the traditional Mass legitimate and asked bishops to respect it.

  1. Verifiable fact

    Ecclesia Dei, 1988

John Paul II wrote that “respect must everywhere be shown for the feelings of all those who are attached to the Latin liturgical tradition, by a wide and generous application” of the directives on the 1962 Missal (Ecclesia Dei 6c, text).

Statement 3 · Athanasius Schneider

The Bishop of Antwerp announced he will ordain married men despite Church law.

  1. Verifiable fact

The announcement was in March 2026

Bishop Johan Bonny said in a pastoral letter in March 2026 that he would “make every effort” to ordain married men in his diocese by 2028 (America; Catholic Herald). Such ordinations would need a dispensation under current Latin-rite law, which he has not received. The announcement came this year, not last year as the quote says.

Bottom line

Bishop Schneider’s factual points largely hold: John Paul II did ask bishops to respect attachment to the old Mass, and the Bishop of Antwerp did announce plans to ordain married men (in 2026). The goal he attributes to Traditionis custodes is stated in the accompanying letter.
