The Remnant’s statement to Leo XIV quotes Francis fairly, but not Benedict

Michael Matt’s closing statement at the 2026 Catholic Identity Conference asks Leo XIV to restore the Latin Mass and puts a series of questions to him. Its report of Francis in Singapore holds up; its reading of Benedict XVI’s last address to Rome’s clergy, and its claim that the Vatican has been silent for twenty years on homosexual acts, do not.

On 11 October 2026 The Remnant published “We Demand the Latin Mass”, the closing statement of the 2026 Catholic Identity Conference, signed by Michael J. Matt and Eric Frankovitch and addressed to Pope Leo XIV. It asks the Pope to restore the traditional Latin Mass and questions him on the Second Vatican Council, other religions and moral teaching. Three of its statements of fact can be checked against the Holy See’s own texts.

Context

The statement is dated 4 October 2026, the feast of St Francis, and was read at the close of the Catholic Identity Conference. The Remnant also published a video of it and invites readers to sign it before it is sent to Rome. Most of the text is appeal and argument; the claims below are its statements of fact about papal texts.

On statement 1 · Michael J. Matt, The Remnant

The statement uses the address to ask which Council the Society of St. Pius X is said to reject: “The real one, which never actually materialized, or the council of the media”.

On statement 2 · Michael J. Matt, The Remnant

The statement sets the remark against a passage from Pius XI’s encyclical Mortalium animos (1928) and asks which of the two must be accepted.

On statement 3 · Michael J. Matt, The Remnant

The teaching in question is the one the statement quotes from 1994, that homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered. The words are those of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (n. 2357), whose English edition appeared that year.

Statement 1 · Michael J. Matt, The Remnant

In his last address before resigning, Benedict XVI said the true Second Vatican Council had never materialised.

  1. Verifiable fact

The audience was the clergy of Rome

Benedict XVI gave the 14 February 2013 address at a “Meeting with the parish priests and the clergy of Rome” in the Paul VI Audience Hall, not to the Roman Curia (vatican.va). He spoke about his memories of the Council.

  2. Verifiable fact

Benedict said the real Council was emerging

The Holy See’s English text reads: “the real Council had difficulty establishing itself and taking shape; the virtual Council was stronger than the real Council. But the real force of the Council was present and, slowly but surely, established itself more and more”. He went on: “50 years after the Council, we see that this virtual Council is broken, is lost, and there now appears the true Council with all its spiritual force.” The statement’s quotation ends with “the real Council failed to materialize”, which is not in the official text, and leaves out the sentences that follow.

One Council, two ways of receiving it

Benedict contrasted “the Council of the Fathers – the real Council” with “the Council of the media”, the way the world perceived it. He did not say there were two Councils of which the faithful may choose one; he called the bishops’ Council the real one and said it was “our task … to work so that the true Council, with its power of the Holy Spirit, be accomplished”.

Statement 2 · Michael J. Matt, The Remnant

Pope Francis told young people in Singapore in 2024 that all religions are a path to God.

  1. Verifiable fact

The Holy See’s transcript has nearly these words

At the interreligious meeting with young people at Catholic Junior College, Singapore, on 13 September 2024, Francis said, in the Holy See’s English transcript: “All religions are paths to God. I will use an analogy, they are like different languages that express the divine.” And: “There is only one God, and religions are like languages, paths to reach God. Some Sikh, some Muslim, some Hindu, some Christian.” The statement’s wording differs slightly; the substance is reported correctly.

Off-the-cuff remarks, not a doctrinal act

Francis was speaking without a text, in a question-and-answer exchange with students, to urge respect between young people of different faiths. Remarks of this kind are not a doctrinal decision, and they did not revise documents such as the Declaration Dominus Iesus (2000), which remains the Holy See’s fullest statement on the Church and other religions. Whether the words fit that teaching is a fair question; the statement asks it.

Statement 3 · Michael J. Matt, The Remnant

The Vatican has not restated its teaching on homosexual acts for more than twenty years.

  1. Verifiable fact

    Restated in 2021

In March 2021 the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith answered that “it is not licit to impart a blessing on relationships, or partnerships, even stable, that involve sexual activity outside of marriage … as is the case of the unions between persons of the same sex”, citing Catechism n. 2357. It added that God “does not and cannot bless sin” (Holy See Press Office).

Responsum of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith to a dubium regarding the blessing of the unions of persons of the same sex

      Read source

  2. Verifiable fact

Fiducia supplicans says the doctrine stands

Fiducia supplicans (18 December 2023) itself says that “it is only in this context”, marriage between a man and a woman, “that sexual relations find their natural, proper, and fully human meaning. The Church’s doctrine on this point remains firm.” It recalls the 2021 Responsum and presents the blessings it allows as given “without officially validating their status or changing in any way the Church’s perennial teaching on marriage.” The Catechism text quoted by the statement is unchanged.

  3. TradWatch analysis

A real question, a wrong premise

Critics of Fiducia supplicans, the statement among them, can fairly ask whether blessing couples in such unions sends a mixed message. That is a judgement about prudence and clarity. The premise that the Vatican has said nothing on the moral question for twenty years is not correct.

    Source

Bottom line

The statement reports Francis’s Singapore remark fairly. It misreads Benedict XVI’s 2013 address: Benedict spoke to Rome’s clergy, not the Curia, and said the real Council was gaining strength, not that it never materialised. Its claim that the Vatican has been silent on homosexual acts for twenty years is wrong: the 2021 Responsum and Fiducia supplicans both restate the teaching.
