LifeSite says Pope Leo named an archbishop who “backed same-sex blessings”. His interview is more qualified, and the date is off

Bishop Marek Forgáč did defend Fiducia Supplicans in 2024, but within the Slovak bishops’ limits: no blessing that looks like approval or a sacrament. LifeSite also puts the Košice appointment on “last Thursday”; the Holy See announced it on Wednesday 14 October.

On 14 October 2026 LifeSiteNews reported that Pope Leo XIV had named Bishop Marek Forgáč, until now an auxiliary bishop of Košice, as the Slovak archdiocese’s new archbishop, under the headline “Pope Leo names bishop who backed same-sex blessings as archbishop”. Its case rests on a July 2024 interview Bishop Forgáč gave to the Slovak magazine Nové Mesto. Quotations from that interview below are our translation from the Slovak.

LifeSiteNews · October 14, 2026

Context

The rest of the report is LifeSite’s argument that the bishop’s emphasis on “the concrete person” risks setting aside exceptionless moral norms, with criticism of other episcopal appointments under Pope Leo. Those are opinions and are not rated here. Its quotation of his line about general norms and the concrete person matches the interview.

Statement 1 · LifeSiteNews

The new archbishop of Košice backed same-sex blessings and supports Fiducia Supplicans.

  1. Verifiable fact

He defended the document, within the Slovak bishops’ limits

In the interview Bishop Forgáč says many readers misunderstood the Pope’s intention and describes “Francis’s line: a Church whose doors are open to all”, adding: “That does not mean, however, that we would want to deny the values of the Gospel or of moral life.” Asked how the document should be applied, he points to the Slovak bishops’ guidance: it “should not be a blessing that would evoke any kind of confirmation or a sacrament”, should not be given in a solemn form, and those receiving it should express a wish to follow the way of the Gospel (Nové Mesto, July 2024).

    What Fiducia Supplicans permits

The 2023 declaration allows “blessing couples in irregular situations and same-sex couples without officially validating their status or changing in any way the Church’s perennial teaching on marriage” (Fiducia Supplicans, presentation). Supporting it means supporting those short, non-liturgical blessings, not blessings of same-sex unions as such.

  3. TradWatch analysis

    “Poorly prepared” for what

LifeSite reads his line “in Slovakia we are poorly prepared for this” as a complaint that Slovaks resist the novelty. In the interview it follows his remark that the Church must hold “a clear view of the moral principles of life” while trying not to wound people with same-sex attraction: “These are great challenges we need to work on. I think in Slovakia we are poorly prepared for this.” The magazine’s own headline links the phrase to blessings, so LifeSite’s reading is possible, but the sentence is about pastoral care rather than a call to bless unions.

Statement 2 · LifeSiteNews

The appointment was made the Thursday before the report.

  1. Verifiable fact

    Announced on Wednesday 14 October

The Holy See Press Office published the acceptance of Archbishop Bernard Bober’s resignation and Bishop Forgáč’s appointment in its bulletin of 14 October 2026 (Holy See bulletin; Vatican News, in Slovak), the same day as LifeSite’s report. His age, 52, is correct: he was born on 21 January 1974.

Bottom line

Bishop Forgáč did defend Fiducia Supplicans in 2024, but within the Slovak bishops’ limits: no blessing that suggests approval or resembles a sacrament, and none given in solemn form. “Backed same-sex blessings” leaves out those limits. LifeSite also dates the appointment to “last Thursday”; the Holy See announced it on Wednesday 14 October.
