Integrity Magazine on Viganò and Amoris laetitia: his Trent citations are accurate, but the cardinals did follow up on their dubia
Reporting Archbishop Viganò’s reply to the Amoris laetitia anniversary meeting, Integrity Magazine quotes him correctly on what the Council of Trent taught. Its own aside that the dubia cardinals “never” followed up is wrong: they published the questions in 2016 after receiving no answer, and submitted new ones in 2023.

Statement 1: Carlo Maria Viganò
Integrity Magazine · October 16, 2026
Trent anathematized whoever says that the Church errs when it teaches that the matrimonial bond is not dissolved by adultery, and that other marriages may be contracted while the spouse is still living. It established that whoever is conscious of mortal sin must not approach the Eucharist without prior sacramental Confession.
In brief: The Council of Trent condemned denying that marriage is indissoluble even after adultery, and required confession before Communion for anyone conscious of mortal sin.
Our verdict: AccurateThe record supports the claim as stated.

The Council of Trent condemned denying that marriage is indissoluble even after adultery, and required confession before Communion for anyone conscious of mortal sin.
Verifiable fact Session XXIV, canon 7
Trent anathematised anyone who says “the Church has erred, in that she hath taught … that the bond of matrimony cannot be dissolved on account of the adultery of one of the married parties; and that both … cannot contract another marriage, during the life-time of the other” (text). The English in the article, translated from his Italian post, compresses this but keeps its sense.

TradWatch analysis The citations are right; the conclusion is his
Whether Amoris laetitia contradicts these canons is the disputed question, and his conclusion that it amounts to heresy is his own judgment; the exhortation’s defenders argue that it changes pastoral discipline, not the doctrine of indissolubility. The record of the canons themselves is accurate.

Statement 2 · Integrity Magazine
The cardinals who submitted the dubia on Amoris laetitia never followed up when the Pope did not answer.
Verifiable fact They went public in 2016
Cardinals Brandmüller, Burke, Caffarra and Meisner sent their dubia on 19 September 2016. When the Pope did not reply, they published the full documentation in November 2016, saying they were “informing the entire people of God about our initiative” (National Catholic Register).

Verifiable fact And submitted new dubia in 2023
In July 2023 Cardinal Burke, Cardinal Brandmüller and three other cardinals submitted five new dubia; the Pope replied, they sent a reformulated set on 21 August, and they made them public on 2 October 2023 when that set went unanswered (Catholic World Report).

Bottom line
Viganò cites Trent accurately on indissolubility and on confession before Communion; whether Amoris laetitia contradicts it is his judgment. Integrity’s aside is inaccurate: the cardinals published their dubia in 2016 and filed new ones in 2023.
