Charles Murr says Interpol confirmed Bugnini was a Freemason. No such evidence has been published

In a podcast interview relayed by InfoVaticana, Fr Charles Murr says documents naming Archbishop Annibale Bugnini as a Freemason were checked with Interpol and found authentic. His account of Bugnini’s removal and of the Church’s penalty for Freemasons holds up; the claim of verified proof rests on his word alone.

On 11 October 2026 InfoVaticana published, in Spanish and English, a passage from Fr Charles Theodore Murr’s two-hour conversation with Pedro Buerbaum on the WORLDCA$T podcast. Murr, a former assistant to Archbishop Édouard Gagnon and author of Murder in the 33rd Degree, describes how Archbishop Annibale Bugnini, the architect of the post-conciliar liturgical reform, came to be accused of Freemasonry and removed. The quotations below are translated from InfoVaticana’s Spanish text.

Context

Accusations that Bugnini was a Freemason have circulated since the 1970s, and his name appeared on the list of alleged clerical Freemasons published by the journalist Mino Pecorelli in 1978, as InfoVaticana recalls. The interview also repeats Murr’s view that the liturgical reform emptied the churches; that is his opinion and is not rated here.

On statement 1 · Fr Charles Murr (interviewed on WORLDCA$T, as reported by InfoVaticana)

Murr dates the episode to 1974: a priest whose name he says he does not know brought documents to Cardinal Dino Staffa, prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, who with Cardinal Silvio Oddi took them to Paul VI.

On statement 2 · Fr Charles Murr (interviewed on WORLDCA$T, as reported by InfoVaticana)

Murr calls it a promotion meant to move Bugnini out of the Vatican.

On statement 3 · Fr Charles Murr (interviewed on WORLDCA$T, as reported by InfoVaticana)

Murr is explaining why the accusation was so grave at the time.

Statement 1 · Fr Charles Murr (interviewed on WORLDCA$T, as reported by InfoVaticana)

Documents showing that Archbishop Bugnini was a Freemason were checked with Interpol and found authentic.

  1. Verifiable fact

The documents have never been published

Neither the documents Murr describes nor any report of an Interpol check has been made public. InfoVaticana’s own article notes that Bugnini “always denied any link with Freemasonry” and, in his memoirs of the reform, blamed his fall on an anonymous dossier brought to the Pope. It adds that Archbishop Gagnon’s report on the Curia “was handed to three Popes and has never been published” (InfoVaticana).

  2. TradWatch analysis

    One witness’s recollection

Murr says he does not know who brought the documents, and he gives no source for the Interpol check. His account may reflect what he was told in the Curia, and the accusation against Bugnini has circulated since the 1970s (see Freemasonry claims). But until the documents or the check he describes can be examined, the statement that they were proved authentic cannot be confirmed. It is an accusation, not a finding.

Statement 2 · Fr Charles Murr (interviewed on WORLDCA$T, as reported by InfoVaticana)

Bugnini was removed from the Congregation for Divine Worship and sent to Iran as nuncio.

  1. Verifiable fact

    The dates bear it out

Bugnini became secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship in May 1969 and was appointed Apostolic Pro-Nuncio to Iran on 4 January 1976 (Catholic-Hierarchy). His post ended when Paul VI merged the Congregations for Divine Worship and for the Sacraments by the apostolic constitution Constans nobis of 11 July 1975 (vatican.va). The merged body was named the Congregation for the Sacraments and Divine Worship; Murr’s name for it is the later one.

Statement 3 · Fr Charles Murr (interviewed on WORLDCA$T, as reported by InfoVaticana)

In the 1970s, joining Freemasonry brought automatic excommunication.

  1. Verifiable fact

True then, and membership is still forbidden

The 1917 Code of Canon Law, in force in the 1970s, named Masonic associations expressly (as the 1983 declaration below recalls) and attached excommunication to joining them (can. 2335). The 1983 Code no longer names them, but the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith declared that year that “the Church’s negative judgment in regard to Masonic association remains unchanged”, that “membership in them remains forbidden”, and that Catholics who enrol “are in a state of grave sin and may not receive Holy Communion” (CDF, 26 November 1983).

Bottom line

Murr’s account of Bugnini’s career is accurate: he was removed when the congregations were merged in 1975 and sent to Iran in 1976, and joining Freemasonry did bring excommunication then. But the claim that Interpol confirmed documents proving Bugnini a Freemason rests on Murr’s word alone; the documents have never been published, and Bugnini denied the charge.
