About Mark Pivarunas

Mark Pivarunas is an American sedevacantist bishop and the superior general of the Congregation of Mary Immaculate Queen (CMRI) (Wikipedia).

Career. Born in Chicago, he joined the congregation in 1974. Bishop George Musey ordained him a priest at Mount Saint Michael in Spokane, Washington, on 27 June 1985. He was elected superior general in August 1989, at age thirty (Wikipedia).

Consecration. Bishop Moisés Carmona visited Mount Saint Michael in January 1991 and left a letter offering to consecrate whomever the congregation chose. The congregation chose Pivarunas on 3 April 1991, and Carmona consecrated him at Mount Saint Michael on 24 September 1991 (Wikipedia; Catholic-Hierarchy). Carmona, a Mexican priest, had been consecrated in 1981 by Archbishop Ngô Đình Thục (Wikipedia). The consecration took place without a papal mandate. The reference site Catholic-Hierarchy lists Pivarunas as not in union with the Holy See (Catholic-Hierarchy).

2007 departures. In 2007, fifteen sisters at the Mount Saint Michael motherhouse who had come to accept the authority of the post-conciliar popes left the congregation; accounts differ on whether they left of their own accord or were told to leave. They were later received into the Catholic Church in the Diocese of Spokane (Wikipedia; Catholic World Report).

Church teaching on the point at issue. The Catechism teaches that particular Churches are fully catholic through communion with the Church of Rome (CCC 834) (Catechism).
