About Riposte catholique
Riposte catholique was a French Catholic news and commentary portal that described its work as réinformation ('re-information'). Its 'À propos' page states that it went online on 1 January 2010 and names Guillaume de Thieulloy as publication director (Riposte catholique). Thieulloy launched it with the journalist Daniel Hamiche (1947–2020), who was its editor-in-chief and later its spokesman (Wikipédia; Riposte catholique).
Place in French traditionalism. An academic study of French traditionalist Catholic networks online treats the réinformation blogs as part of the traditionalist corpus it examined, with a focus on mobilisations against same-sex marriage and on pro-life campaigns (ResearchGate). A 2026 report on the site's relaunch described its editorial line as having been largely devoted to the Summorum Pontificum movement in France (Après la Ciase).
Closure (2026). The site closed in late March 2026; reports give 24 or 25 March (Après la Ciase). In a statement published on Le Salon Beige, Thieulloy said he had failed to find the right balance in reporting on abuse in the Church: silence risked wounding victims a second time, while exposure risked reducing the Church to the crisis and blurring the difference between an accusation and proof of guilt. He also cited the removal of Bishop Rey from the diocese of Toulon as an example of what he called false unity among bishops (Le Salon Beige). The Catholic magazine Famille Chrétienne described the closure as voluntary (Famille Chrétienne); Breizh-info suggested it might be temporary (Breizh-info).
Afterwards. The archives were republished on a mirror site (Après la Ciase), and in May 2026 a group calling itself the Collectif Riposte Catholique, acting independently of Thieulloy, relaunched publication at ripostecatholique.fr (Après la Ciase). Breizh-info reported on 1 July 2026, in Breton, that Riposte catholique had been back online since 25 June and that two sites using the name would coexist (Breizh-info). TradWatch™ has not confirmed which site, if either, is run by the original publisher; the status on this page refers to the original site and should be treated as provisional.
