About Paix Liturgique
Paix Liturgique ("liturgical peace") is a French lay association that campaigns for wider access to the traditional Latin Mass. Its founder, Christian Marquant, also coordinates the Coetus Internationalis Summorum Pontificum, the body behind the annual Ad Petri Sedem pilgrimage to Rome, according to the Associated Press (AP via The Boston Globe).
Opinion polls. The association is known for commissioning surveys of Catholic opinion on the older rite, meant to measure awareness that both forms of the Mass were permitted and potential demand for the older one. British Religion in Numbers described polls in France (2001, 2006 and 2008), Italy (2009), and Germany and Portugal (2010), and a British poll that drew 800 professing Catholics from an online panel of 6,153 adults (BRIN). A 2017 Spanish-language compilation brought together polls from nine countries (Latin Mass Society).
The Rome pilgrimage. After Leo XIV's election, Marquant wrote to the Pope on behalf of some 70 traditionalist groups asking, among other things, for a Mass in the old rite in St. Peter's Basilica during the annual pilgrimage. According to Marquant, Cardinal Raymond Burke delivered the letter at an audience on 22 August 2025 and Leo gave permission; Burke celebrated at the Altar of the Chair on 25 October 2025. Marquant said the pilgrimage had not obtained such permission in 2023 or 2024 (AP via NCR). For the 2026 pilgrimage (23–25 October), InfoVaticana, citing the Catholic Herald, reported that a Secretariat of State letter of 7 August said the Mass could not be held in St. Peter's "this year", and that Bishop Athanasius Schneider would celebrate it instead at the Basilica of St. Mary Major (InfoVaticana; InfoVaticana). No official explanation had been reported.
